At the Faculty of Social Science, you will receive 6 ECTS per course as an undergraduate student and 9ECTS per course as a postgraduate student. However, there are some exceptions: this rule does not apply for courses about statistics and economics within the Modern Indian studies postgraduate program. Students receive 4 ECTS for Statistics and 6 ECTS for economics courses in Modern Indian Studies. These rules also apply for courses taught in German. Please be aware that the amount of ECTS you get for key competences differs. Please note: Courses at the Center for Modern Indian Studies always consist of an exercise and a seminar, both of which must be attended.

Glossary:

Tutorium / Study group / tutorial
Courses of basic studies which accompany other courses such as lectures, exercises or proseminars, are mostly led by students from more advanced semesters, and in which practical exercises are carried out (not available in all subjects).

Hauptseminar / Advanced seminar
Course during the advanced study period, requiring sound knowledge in the application of subject-related methods, sometimes even requiring prior completion of stage-1 studies.

Lehrveranstaltung / Course
General term for teaching and learning events at a university such as lectures, seminars, tutorials or exercises.

Proseminar
Course during basic (stage-1) studies to introduce students to scientific problems, techniques of scientific work and other areas relevant to advanced studies.

Ringvorlesung / Lecture series
An often interdisciplinary series of lectures on a general topic held by different speakers.

Seminar
A seminar is a course in which students ideally contribute a substantial part themselves, by way of presentations and statements; depending on the stage of studies, a distinction is made between proseminars, advanced seminars and post-graduate seminars.

Übung / Tutorial / exercise
Mostly offered in conjunction with a lecture; here practical implications are explained or the application of what has been learned is practised.

Vorlesung / Lecture
Course of basic or advanced studies, in which the lecturer generally speaks about scientific topics and the students listen; discussions are rare.
